NZeTA and the visitor levy: who needs them and what they cost

The short answer

Visitors to New Zealand on US, British, Canadian and Japanese passports need an NZeTA: NZ$17 in the official app or NZ$23 on the Immigration New Zealand website, plus the NZ$100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy. It's valid for 2 years. Allow up to 72 hours for it to be processed. Australian citizens need neither.

Before you request it

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand.
  • Request it only in the official NZeTA app or on immigration.govt.nz. The app is the cheaper option.
  • Allow up to 72 hours for processing, so don't leave it to the airport.
  • An NZeTA is valid for 2 years, so you may not need a new one for your next trip.

Everyone also completes a Traveller Declaration

Whatever your passport, you complete a free New Zealand Traveller Declaration from 24 hours before your trip to New Zealand starts. It covers customs, biosecurity and immigration.
