Europe (Schengen area) entry requirements

Travellers on US, British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Japanese passports can visit the Schengen area without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. There's no form before you go: you register in the Entry/Exit System at the border with fingerprints and a photo. ETIAS isn't required yet.

Guides for this trip

Europe questions, answered

Do I need ETIAS for Europe?

Not yet. ETIAS isn't required and the EU hasn't confirmed a start date. When it starts it will cost €20.

What is the Entry/Exit System?

A digital record of your entries and exits that replaces passport stamps. Your fingerprints and a photo are taken at the border. There's nothing to do before you travel.

How does the 90/180-day rule work?

On any day of your stay, count back 180 days. You can have spent no more than 90 of them in the Schengen area.

Do children give fingerprints?

Children under 12 don't give fingerprints, but they're still registered.
